Hitaji Development Initiative (HDI) is a registered Kenyan non-profit organization working in collaboration with other NGOs, churches and the community to address the challenges and needs that poor women and girls face in Migori County, Kenya. Hitaji works with poor rural women and girls to empower them socially and economically through education sponsorships, mentorship and socio-economic activities.

Founded in 2011 by Asenath Dande it was established with a mission of mitigating suffering, embarking on providing lifesaving holistic services to most vulnerable communities focusing especially on women, children and youths.

Over the past years, The NGO has grown in capacity with an increase in staff, partners, volunteers, programs and projects in the different parts of Migori County. The programs have shored-up and currently include Education, Food Security and Livelihood, Girls protection and microfinance initiatives which address the immediate and long term needs of the communities in which we operate.

Since its founding the organization has impacted the lives of more than 750 women through training on small scale businesses and support with micro loans to carry out various businesses and activities ranging from farming, local trading, catering services and sewing of clothes to soap making.

The organization has also directly impacted the lives of more than 10 secondary students with school fee payment, school learning materials and other personal needs. Indirectly the organization has impacted more than 500 students through mentorship. Most of our beneficiaries are women and girls from disadvantaged households who mostly suffer from the burden of HIV/AIDS and generational poverty.

HDI works in collaboration with others to build communities resilience with hope to become self-sufficient, and to increase the pool of capable community members, able to transform the whole society out of extreme poverty, illiteracy and diseases, and to improve social amenities, welfare and economic livelihoods.
